I’ve been a King’s Quest fan since I first played the original game as a kid. It’s been a long time since King Graham has been given an official new mission (although The Silver Lining was a fantastic fan response). In any case, Activision have revitalised the Sierra brand and are releasing a new King’s Quest game this year, and I for one am excited.
At first I was filled with trepidation. Especially when I heard that it did not have a point-and-click interface, but was still “very much an adventure game”. Well, a lot has been happening recently. We got a fantastic trailer (see below) late last year, then there was the heart-warming scene when Roberta Williams passed the adventurer’s cap to the new developer at the 2014 Game Awards. Just in the last few days a playable demo has been shown off at GDC2015.
In the wake of this demo a couple of articles have been published about first impressions of the game – and it is all sounding very positive. I’m loving the approach that has been described and I can’t wait to join Gwendolyn as old King Graham tells her some brand new stories of his adventuring days.

I’m loving the story-telling aspect of old King Graham teaching important moral lessons to his granddaughter by relaying tales from his past. This certainly keeps with the spirit of the original games. As many of the invterviews have said “Graham is always good” but you still have to think about the consequences of your actions, and ultimately what lesson those actions will be teaching Gwendolyn.
It will be great to start sharing this experience with my own kids once the first episode is released.
