I’ve had a big weekend. I travelled to Hobart for the Tasmanian Indie Authors Book Fair. This was the first time I had appeared at an in-person event so I was a little nervous. Fortunately, my head marketing director (a.k.a. my wife) came with me. Her support was invaluable and helped me get through a day of extroverting among strangers.
It turned out to be a great experience. I felt right at home surrounded by my people. Who’d have thought there were so many other indie authors in Tasmania? I had a table next to my friend Chrissy Garwood who I know from Omega Writers, and who provided some early beta feedback on one of my Jewel of The Stars books. This was a big help and made the day that much more pleasant.
I sold a small number of books, which was nice, but quite a few people took business cards so there might be some online sales in the coming weeks. But the biggest advantages of the day were making connections with other Tasmanian indie authors (in my own awkward introvert way) and picking up some ideas from observing how others did things.
I spent the next day on a book-shop-crawl visiting every bookshop in Hobart, looking for some titles my daughter wanted. It wasn’t until I got home Sunday night that the exhaustion really hit me, both physical and mental.
Now that I have a little stock of books, and a bunch of new ideas, I’ll be on the lookout for other in-person opportunities around the state. I am also newly inspired in my creativity having been around so many other authors.
