The Emperor’s Soul by Brandon Sanderson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This novella follows the character Shai, a forger who has the magical ability to alter the state of objects, and even people, by re-writing their past. She has been captured and forced to perform the ultimate forgery – re-creating the soul of the near-dead Emperor. She knows that if she fails she’ll be killed, and probably also if she succeeds, but what forger could resist such a challenge.
The book had a seriously cool magic system. It took me a little while to get my head around it, but once I did I loved it. As usual, Brandon Sanderson has come up with a fun idea, then applied pseudo-scientific rules, and then extrapolated into places most of us would not have thought.
The story had a thrilling climax that brought together all the ideas that had been building. The only thing I didn’t like about Shai’s story was having to leave her when it was over.
